Gamma Technologies Teams Up with the College of Engineering at the University of Alabama to Enhance Battery Education with Advanced Simulation Software

University of AlabamaGamma Technologies (GT), a global leader and innovator in multi-physics systems simulation software, announced its commitment of software and support to the University of Alabama’s College of Engineering. The two organizations are working together to teach students cutting-edge skills for battery engineering by integrating advanced simulation tools in an academic setting.

The University introduced its first course with GT software this past fall, taught by Dr. Krishna Shah, which focused on battery technology, including pack- and module-level, as well as cell- and electrode-level engineering and design. The course covered the inner workings of Lithium-ion technologies, as well as key principles of battery system design spanning battery pack and module design to cell and electrode design to meet energy and power density requirements.

GT supplied the course students with GT-SUITE, the multi-physics modeling platform ideal for battery thermal management, thermal runaway propagation, and battery mechanical design analysis as well as GT-AutoLion, the leading electrochemical modeling tool for Lithium-ion and beyond Lithium-ion technologies. GT-AutoLion simulations are ideal for battery performance prediction, battery degradation prediction, and cell safety modeling.

To complement the course lectures from Dr. Krishna Shah, students were given free access to GT-University for expert training material.

In the inaugural course offering that included GT software and support, students tapped into their creativity to define and complete impressive projects, including:

  • Artificial heart – an analysis of multiple cathode chemistries and cell design on the performance and degradation of a lightweight Lithium-ion battery pack powering an artificial heart
  • Automotive benchmarking – a study of how ambient temperature affects a battery pack in automotive applications, for both drive cycle scenarios and charging scenarios
  • Electric go-kart racing – a sizing and design project for a Lithium-ion battery pack for an electric go-kart to fit race specifications and maximum performance capabilities that tested both performance and degradation requirements

“Modeling, and specifically electrochemical modeling, is a valuable teaching tool for us because it provides an interactive way to learn and understand physical phenomena and behavior of cells,” said Dr. Krishna Shah, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama. “With GT-AutoLion, we setup virtual sensors to measure concentrations, potentials, flux rates, other quantities that are impossible to measure in an operational Li-ion cell, which greatly enhances the learning process.”

“We look forward to building on this collaboration with the University of Alabama and hope to continue to bring GT simulation tools into more engineering classrooms,” remarked Dimple Shah, President and CEO of Gamma Technologies.  “Together with universities across the globe, we hope to play a small role in preparing today’s students to compete as tomorrow’s top simulation engineers.”

Machine Learning: Anomaly Detection and Data Classification Algorithms

GT-SUITE’s Machine Learning Assistant has been extended to support the creation, training, and export of anomaly or fault detection metamodels. These new types of metamodels allow specific fault characteristics to be detected (e.g. stuck valve, leaky pipe, etc.), a critical capability for digital twins. Additionally, GT-SUITE models can realistically simulate real-world faults that can be used to train these metamodels, instead of subjecting hardware to potentially damaging scenarios.

Batteries: Semi-automatic AutoLion model calibration and sodium-ion cell modeling

GT-AutoLion now includes a new wizard that walks users through the process of calibrating a GT-AutoLion model to experimental data, reducing the time required to calibrate these electrochemical models. GT-AutoLion also has new capabilities to model sodium-ion cells, allowing users to benchmark this new technology and how it performs in integrated systems.

Motors & Drives: New workflows integrating electric motors and inverters to solve for both NVH and system losses

GT-FEMAG and GT-PowerForge can now be set up to precisely calculate the interactions between a motor and its inverter. This includes the ability to account for the inverter’s pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy on system losses and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

Vehicle Systems: New Microscopic Traffic Scenarios

Engineers can now study high-fidelity powertrain models in real-world conditions, factoring in the unpredictability of microscopic traffic and driver behavior. This enhanced approach, which utilizes GT-SUITE with SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility), provides a more realistic assessment of vehicle performance and fuel/energy-saving potential in urban conditions.

Vehicle Dynamics: Run Fast for Controls Optimization

Experience unparalleled efficiency with our advanced 14 degrees of freedom (DOF) vehicle model. Faster than conventional 3D models, it empowers analysts to design and optimize control systems with ease. This model runs faster than real-time on the desktop enabling quick turnaround times for stability, handling and performance control algorithm development.

Thermal Fluids: Characterize complex components using GT-Auto-3DFlow

GT-Auto-3DFlow has been extended to allow the characterization of pressure drop, flow distribution, and heat transfer in complex components and plumbing, where 3D effects are important. An easy-to-use, guided wizard enables any GT user to perform accurate 3D flow simulations and the entire workflow remains in GT. This is an accurate, fast, and easy-to-use 3D flow simulation designed specifically for system simulation engineers.

Mechanics and Tribology: Flex-Flex EHD solution for Journal and Thrust Bearings

Journal bearing EHD (elastohydrodynamic) and thrust bearing EHD solutions have been enhanced to model flexibility on both sides, making it a flex-flex EHD solution. EHD solutions are critical in understanding the oil film behavior in heavily loaded bearings that operate in the mixed lubrication regime. Coupling elasticity on both surfaces of the bearing is critical in predicting the region of peak film/contact pressure and wear.

Batteries: Automatic Creation of Electrical and Thermal Battery Pack Model in GEM-3D

GEM3D v2025.1 propaation modelGEM-3D now provides a new workflow to convert CAD geometry to battery cells (GT-AutoLion electrochemical or equivalent circuit models) and define how the cells are connected electrically and thermally to build a module or pack. This new workflow saves hours of model-building time over the old method to build an integrated model, by reducing the conversion and meshing time in GEM-3D and automatically building and integrating the electrical model.

Motors: New, More Powerful Template Geometries in GT-FEMAG

GT-FEMAG 2025.1 GT-FEMAG template geometries imagehas new template geometries for both rotors and stators. For rotors, a new interior permanent magnet geometry template for V-shape magnets now allows 1, 2, 3, or 4 pairs of concentric V-angled magnets. For stators, new geometry templates allow individual wires to be defined (round or hairpin) and AC winding losses can now be calculated with either a finite element approach or an analytical approach.

Motors: New Coupling between Electromagnetics and Thermal in GT-FEMAG

GT-FEMAG 2025.1 GT-FEMAG Coupling electromagnetics and thermalalso offers the ability to run a 2D finite element thermal model to calculate the temperature distribution alongside the built-in electromagnetic motor models.  This now allows hot spots to be detected and to calculate steady state max torque while adhering to temperature limits of the magnets and windings. Additionally, a thermal network including a map-based motor can be exported to run transient electro-thermal models in an integrated simulation.

Thermal Fluids: Optimize Passenger Comfort and Range in Real-time using an Auto-generated Cabin ROM

MTU Aero Engines Chooses GT-SUITE for Thermal Management Simulation

A leader in the quest for emissions-free aviation, MTU will leverage Gamma Technologies’ GT-SUITE for its novel Water-Enhanced Turbofan

WESTMONT, IL, USA, August 3, 2023 — Gamma Technologies (GT), a global leader and innovator in multi-physics system simulation software, is pleased to welcome MTU Aero Engines (MTU), a leader in the quest for emissions-free aviation, as one of its latest clients. MTU selected GT-SUITE as one of its tools for thermodynamic simulation of important components for its Water-Enhanced Turbofan (WET), which reduces contrails and CO2 and NOx emissions. By 2035, when powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or hydrogen, a WET based engine could reduce the climate impact of an aircraft by about 80 percent compared to a gas turbine engine from the year 2000—making it virtually climate neutral.

The WET propulsion concept uses residual heat from exhaust to achieve a steam generator to vaporize water, which is then injected into the combustor. The water for this is extracted from the exhaust gas by means of a condenser and then separated; GT-SUITE helps to simulate the complex heat exchanges from this operation.
“We are committed to pioneering technology with the goal of sustainable aviation,” remarked Dr. Jochen Gier, Team Lead of Cooling, Heat Transfer and Combustion at MTU. “After looking at all the available tools, Gamma Technologies’ GT-SUITE was a perfect fit for our complex WET heat exchanger simulations.”

Dimple Shah, President and CEO of Gamma Technologies, said, “Working with visionary organizations like MTU Aero Engines, that push the envelope of engineering to reduce the climate impact and energy use of aviation propulsion is gratifying and aligned with our corporate mission toward a more sustainable world. Their commitment to engineering tomorrow’s engines today is admirable and we are pleased our tools are proving to be instrumental in the development of these amazing technologies.”
“We were very happy with the way we can leverage parametric studies and optimization, user friendly post-processing and the ability to combine 3DCFD results in GT-SUITE to calculate unevenly distributed flows through these components, added Dr. Gier. “GT-SUITE fits quite well into our development toolchain and gives us the opportunity to evaluate each component as part of the complete system.”

Charging Ahead

Battery safety and failure mitigation: Define your own chemical side reactions in GT-AutoLion for a more physics-based model for thermal runaway propagation, including the venting of gaseous products to GT’s flow domain.

Motor/Drive Efficiency: We have increased the accuracy of motor power loss maps calculated with GT-FEMAG by adding rotor and stator temperature dependency. In addition, we have enabled the use of the GT-SUITE Optimizer for GT-PowerForge inverter models.

Heat Exchanger Performance: Through a new high-fidelity condensation and frosting/melting model, users can now study the impact of heat exchanger frosting on vehicle performance and range.

Controls Optimization and Verification

Dynamic ECMS: GT-SUITE is now capable of providing the optimal controls (ECMS) solution for multi-physics dynamic, forward-facing xEV system models. Look for the new ECMSController template in the Controls Library.

Fast VTM Plant Models: GT-SUITE now provides an automated tool to tag all thermal management piping circuits which can be reduced to save CPU time. The new automation of tagging circuits can greatly speed up the process to go from detailed to fast running model for controls development.

Effortless integration of SIMULINK models in GT-SUITE: You can forget the need to compile SIMULINK models to import them in GT-SUITE. GT-SUITE can now automatically open a MATLAB session and co-simulate SIMULINK models directly.

The Potential Power of Hydrogen

Hydrogen research is today enjoying significant momentum as the world is attempting to make carbon-free fuels an important part of our clean and secure energy future, especially for the marine and locomotive industry. Within GT-SUITE, new templates have been developed to model PEM electrolyzer stacks. Along with this, a new model has been developed to predict fuel stratification for engines with direct injection of gaseous fuels such as hydrogen. To model production of hydrogen from other fuels to use in fuel cells and combustion engines, example models of fuel reformers for methanol, methane, and ammonia have also been created.

3D Vehicle Dynamics – 3D Suspension Builder

Users can generate four common independent suspension configurations parametrically using hard points and geometry with 3D visual support. The Suspension3D template removes barriers for creating suspension models by reducing setup time. Additionally, the parametric approach enables suspension optimization by removing the manual steps required to manipulate geometry in previous versions.

Enhanced Machine Learning

Users can now import multiple datasets to DOE-POST, apply training, validation, and test labels to those datasets, train deep neural networks, and export them back to GT-SUITE. Optionally utilize new Python API for creating and training metamodels. This improves the process for training data to fast-executing and accurate metamodels.

Hopium is leveraging the physics-based GT-SUITE models and virtual calibration processes to predict performance — even before test data is available. Using this modeling approach and mirroring the system-level performance, Hopium engineering can ne-tune and seek the optimal operating point of the fuel cell stack, thus shortening the amount of time needed to make educated engineering decisions.

“Hopium is in a unique position where we are, at the same time, stack designers and system integrators,” remarked Jérémy Hattenberger, System, Simulation and Modeling Lead at HOPIUM. “As part of our development, we rely heavily on system modeling and analysis and chose GT-SUITE simulations for stack and system sizing. We need accurate models to guide our choices as well as control algorithms.” Hattenberger continued, “To do that effectively, we need precision, a wide range of component libraries, fast and accurate models, and a mastery of the e-powertrain ecosystem. GT-SUITE has proven to deliver for Hopium in addition to their superior customer support.”

“Hopium is engineering, in record time, the performance hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) of the future,” stated Iakovos Papadimitriou, Gamma Technologies’ CTO. “Using GT-SUITE to predict system-level performance allows them to optimize their designs early in the development process. They are well on their way to achieving their goal of developing an exceptional performance, high-end FCEV vehicle.”

When designing a vehicle system with many interdependent variables, scaling simulation needs with the requirements of the different V-Cycle stages is of strategic importance. Using GT-SUITE, the Hopium engineering team was able to build the sophisticated models they needed. This included a detailed stack and system model starting from an initial performance image of the fuel cell stack, supplier tests and information. Following the model build in GT-SUITE, they began exploring a multitude of boundary conditions and their impact on the system holistic performance.

Hopium made the bold decision to design its own fuel cell stack and the corresponding system for its Machina. This development is currently underway with the aim of delivering performance-oriented, exciting high-end automobiles. Gamma Technologies is excited about this journey, and to be part of Hopium’s development story.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University Use AutoLion to Grasp Battery Aging and Range with AEVs

July 2, 2020

A team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University used AutoLion battery simulation software to answer a lingering question within the autonomous electric vehicle space; does my range and battery life suffer from the increased energy consumption of the autonomous electric vehicle (AEV) hardware/software? Many OEMs are split in their thinking of how much of an impact this will be. The researchers attempted to understand the uncertainty around this concept. According to the CMU analysis recently published in Nature Energy, they find that the impact could be minimal with energy-efficient computing and an aerodynamic sensor stack.

This study has great timing as many OEMs across the world are starting to set their own formula when it comes to mixing autonomous capability and electrified vehicles. The researchers attempted to account for the degree of autonomous technology (varying computing load and hardware load) and the vehicle architecture (LiDAR aerodynamic drag or no drag).

The study began by accounting for various autonomous hardware (cameras and cameras + LiDAR). Then they modeled an electric vehicle from first-principlesNext, the model was used on two velocity profiles (city, highway/suburban) with smoothing for autonomous operation and including sensor and computing loads. Using AutoLion, they accounted for the aging impact to the battery.

With AutoLion, they determined that the baseline EV would reach the battery end-of-life (80% capacity degradation) in about 110,000 miles. The simulations also showed that AEV with LiDAR reached the end-of-life about 5,000 miles sooner or about 5% more degradation whereas an AEV without LiDAR only had an additional 2% degradation compared to the baseline EV. With GT-AutoLion, OEMs can perform their own study to determine warranty margin, saving them millions of dollars.

“Having reliable battery degradation models under various use conditions is extremely important.  Thus, being able to quantify what is the loss in odometer range over the lifetime of the vehicle is a valuable metric,” said CMU professor Venkat Viswanathan when asked about the importance of accounting for aging to OEMs.

The team found that the addition of autonomous capability impacted city driving range by 10% to 15% along with 5% to 10% in a Suburban/Highway route. They find that based on the yearly advancements of battery energy density this decrease in range due to automation has the same effect as a 1 to 2 year lag.
