Prediction of Noise from an Exhaust System


The advanced Navier-Stokes based solver in GT-POWER intrinsically captures the pressure wave dynamics within the simulated system.  The pressure wave dynamics result in noise being propagated from the intake and exhaust openings of the engine, and GT-POWER is capable of predicting both the levels and quality (frequency content) of the noise from the exhaust tailpipe and intake snorkel.
Advanced 3D pre-processors allow for easy integration of even the most complex mufflers, air boxes, and more.

  • GEM3D, CAD based preprocessing tool allows for quick and reliable creation and meshing of complex geometries
  • Quickly model complicated components, including stamped shell mufflers, molded airboxes, and irregular plenums
  • Mesh models in Cartesian 3D and capture 3D acoustic effects in 1D system simulation run times
  • Includes CAD tool to import CAD files from all major CAD file formats, repair models, extract internal flow geometries and build new geometries from a blank sheet
  • Navier-Stokes based solver for detailed analysis, and linear solver for fast concept analysis
  • Complete analysis, including meshing, can be run in batch mode as part of optimization processes

  • Capability to parameterize properties of parts inside of mufflers, (e.g., baffle locations, perforate properties, etc.) for optimization with GT-SUITE optimizers or by third party optimizers
  • Advanced post-processing displays systems nodes and anti-nodes, as well as mode shapes
  • Generate Campbell diagrams, frequency and order waterfall diagrams, order cuts
  • Generate audio output or predicted sound for sound quality assessment
  • Steady-state or transient analysis
  • Naturally aspirated, Turbocharged, and Supercharged engines
  • Simulate pass-by, engine run-up, and vehicle drive-away
  • Green and Smith flow noise model
  • Model porous pipes, perforated pipes, arbitrary baffles and baffle perforates
  • Model sound absorbing materials (advantex, rock wool, etc)
  • User-input transfer functions for prediction of noise levels at driver’s ear, or other locations
  • Advanced acoustic compressor model, unique to the industry
