This 1-day class will introduce the use of GT-AutoLion and GT-SUITE for modeling of battery systems, modules, and cells.

  • Electrochemical Modeling of Lithium-ion Cells with GT-AutoLion: The fundamentals behind electrochemical modeling will be taught and participants will gain experience in building electrochemical models in GT-AutoLion. Additionally, participants will learn to build calibrated GT-AutoLion models of Li-ion cells from information on a cell’s specifications sheet.
  • Electrical-Equivalent Modeling of Batteries & Characterization: Electrical-equivalent battery models will be introduced and the participant will learn how to define these models in GT-SUITE and GT-AutoLion as well as how to characterize these models from experimental or GT-AutoLion test data.
  • Electro-Thermal Battery Modeling: The participant will learn various options for linking electrical-equivalent or electrochemical battery models to thermo-fluids models of battery systems.
  • Integration with Vehicle System Models: The participant will learn how various battery models may be integrated with vehicle system models to accomplish transient vehicle drive cycle analyses, electric vehicle range prediction, or vehicle performance analyses.

Online Heat Distribution Modeling – Electric Powertrain (Battery)

This 1,5-day class will introduce the use of GT-SUITE software for modeling the distribution of heat within batteries and is intended for users with previous experience or users who participate in this free-of-charge Introduction Training.

Battery heat distribution models enable users to design and optimize the battery pack and its related cooling components such as cooling plates or fins. Furthermore those models can be used to integrate the thermal and electric domains to study system level effects and help design other components like the BMS. The class is targeted towards engineers with responsibility for e-components cooling or total vehicle energy management. This class will cover the process of building and calibrating battery heat distribution models, beginning from CAD data. The process involves significant use of the 3D pre-processing tools of GT-SUITE (GEM3D and GT-SpaceClaim).

The following are the primary topics to be covered:

  • Conversion of CAD Data for battery pack
  • Building up complete model in GEM3D (lumped thermal model and FE-components) and export to GT-ISE
  • Calibration of flow distribution & heat transfer
  • Integration of flow/thermal model into complete thermal management models
  • Link of thermal/flow model to electric circuits

Online Cooling Systems & Components

This class is intended for users with previous experience or users who participate in this free-of-charge Introduction Training.

This 1,5-day class will introduce the use of GT-SUITE software for modeling of vehicle cooling systems. The focus is on the external coolant circuit (outside of engine block/head). The class is targeted towards engineers with responsibility for vehicle thermal management, or for those who are responsible for specifying cooling system components (heat exchangers, pumps, valves, etc.).

This course will be conducted online via web meeting.

The class will consist primarily of interactive model building exercises. The following are the primary topics to be covered:

  • Modeling the coolant flow network: The participant will learn how to build a model of the coolant flow network by two methods. First, the participant will learn how to build flow components manually to understand basic modeling and discretization concepts. Second, the participant will learn how to quickly and easily transform a 3D CAD geometry file into a 1D flow network in GT-SUITE using the pre-processing tool GEM3D.
  • Modeling cooling system components: The participant will learn how to model the basic components of cooling systems, such as pumps, fans, heat exchangers, thermostat valves, etc.
  • Assembling the complete cooling system model: The participant will learn how to assemble the coolant flow network and basic components into a complete model of the cooling system while using a simple 1D representation of the underhood cooling air flow. Steady state and transient analysis of this system will be discussed, along with calibration to measured data.
  • Integration with engine/vehicle system models: The participant will learn how cooling system models may be integrated with simple engine and/or vehicle system models to accomplish a transient vehicle drive cycle analysis.

Online Aftertreatment Systems

This class is intended for users with previous experience or users who participate in this free-of-charge Introduction Training.

This 1.5 day class is intended for GT-POWER users interested in learning how to model exhaust aftertreatment systems.

This 3 half-day class is designed for new users of GT-POWER and GT-SUITE that are interested in modeling internal combustion engines. This class will focus on engine simulation through the use of GT-POWER.

Day 2 – Thursday, 10th August – 9:00 – 16:00

Online AutoLion Model Calibration

This class is intended for users with previous experience using GT-SUITE and GT-AutoLion or users who participate in this free-of-charge Introduction Training and the Introduction to AutoLion & Battery Modeling Training.

This 2-day class will introduce a calibration procedure to calibrate GT-AutoLion electrochemical models to experimental data without having performed a cell teardown.

This course will be conducted online via web meeting over the course of 2 half days.

To reserve your spot, you must have access to the following:

  • Computer with GT-SUITE v2023 (the training will be conducted with v2023, but if you only have v2022 that is acceptable)
  • Access to an active license
  • Good internet connection

This course is targeted towards engineers who do not work at a cell supplier but are responsible for providing calibrated electrochemical models to other CAE departments and teams at their company.  These engineers typically do not have access to the design parameters of the cell, and the calibration procedure followed provides a framework for addressing this challenge.

This class will consist of a mix of presentations and interactive model building exercises.  The following are the primary topics to be covered:

  • Fundamentals of Lithium-ion Technology and Performance Modeling with GT-AutoLion: The fundamentals behind Lithium-ion operation, Li-ion electrode design, and electrochemical modeling of Lithium-ions will be taught and participants will gain experience in calibration techniques for calibrating electrochemical models without all the required cell design information.
  • Fundamentals of Lithium-ion Degradation and Aging Modeling with GT-AutoLion: The fundamentals behind mechanisms that cause Lithium-ion cells to degrade and GT-AutoLion’s approach to modeling Lithium-ion cell degradation will be introduced.
  • Optimization: The calibration procedure requires extensive use of GT’s design optimizer.  Users will learn how to effectively and efficiently utilize this powerful tool to match both performance and aging data.

  • Electrochemical Modeling of Lithium-ion Cells with GT-AutoLion: The fundamentals behind electrochemical modeling will be taught and participants will gain experience in using calibrated electrochemical models in GT-AutoLion.  GT-AutoLion integration into virtual battery test models, system-level models, thermo-fluids models, and 3D models will be covered.
  • Electrical-Equivalent Modeling of Batteries & Characterization: Electrical-equivalent battery models will be introduced and the participant will learn how to define these models in GT-SUITE and GT-AutoLion as well as how to characterize these models from experimental or GT-AutoLion test data.
  • Electro-Thermal Battery Modeling: The participant will learn various options for linking electrical-equivalent or electrochemical battery models to thermo-fluids models of battery systems.
  • Integration with Vehicle System Models: The participant will learn how various battery models may be integrated with vehicle system models to accomplish transient vehicle drive cycle analyses, electric vehicle range prediction, vehicle performance analyses, and long-term battery degradation prediction in vehicle settings.

This class will introduce the use of GT-SUITE software for modeling of vehicle cooling systems.

The class is targeted towards engineers with responsibility for vehicle thermal management, or for those who are responsible for specifying cooling system components (heat exchangers, pumps, valves, etc.).

  • Modeling the coolant flow network: The participant will learn how to build a model of the coolant flow network by two methods. First, the participant will learn how to build flow components manually to understand basic modeling and discretization concepts. Second, the participant will learn how to quickly and easily transform a 3D CAD geometry file into a 1D flow network in GT-SUITE using the pre-processing tool GEM3D. 
  • Modeling cooling system components: The participant will learn how to model the basic components of cooling systems, such as pumps, fans, heat exchangers, thermostat valves, etc. 
  • Assembling the complete cooling system model: The participant will learn how to assemble the coolant flow network and basic components into a complete model of the cooling system while using a simple 1D representation of the underhood cooling air flow. Steady state and transient analysis of this system will be discussed, along with calibration to measured data. 
  • Integration with engine/vehicle system models: The participant will learn how cooling system models may be integrated with simple engine and/or vehicle system models to accomplish a transient vehicle drive cycle analysis

Furthermore those models can be used to integrate the thermal and electric domains to study system level effects and help design other components like the BMS. The class is targeted towards engineers with responsibility for e-components cooling or total vehicle energy management. This class will cover the process of building and calibrating battery heat distribution models, beginning from CAD data. The process involves significant use of the 3D pre-processing tools of GT-SUITE (GEM3D).

This class is designed for users of GT-SUITE that are interested in modeling flow acoustics.  This class will specifically focus on simulation of intake and exhaust systems, including resonators, airboxes, catalysts, and mufflers.  General NVH topics will also be discussed that can apply to any application.

  • Electrochemical Modeling of Lithium-ion Cells with GT-AutoLion: The fundamentals behind electrochemical modeling will be taught and participantswill gain experience in building electrochemical models in GT-AutoLion. Additionally, participants will learn to build calibrated GT-AutoLion models of Li-ion cells from information on a cell’s specifications sheet.
  • Virtual Test Bench using Controls: Overview and Hands on exercises to demonstrate how can we setup battery tester using some of the templates from GT-Controls Library and also discuss fast charging techniques avoiding lithium plating.
  • Electrical-Equivalent Modeling of Batteries & Characterization: Electrical-equivalent battery models will be introduced, and the participant will learn how to define these models in GT-SUITE and GT-AutoLion as well as how to characterize these models from experimental or GT-AutoLion test data.
  • Integration with Vehicle System Models: The participant will learn how various battery models may be integrated with vehicle system models to accomplish transient vehicle drive cycle analyses, electric vehicle range prediction, or vehicle performance analyses.
