This one day course will focus on the application of newly developed exhaust aftertreatment modeling within GT-SUITE. Participants will learn to model various aftertreatment components such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), Selective Catalytic Reactors (SCR), Lean NOX Traps (LNT) and Three Way Catalysts (TWC) using built in chemistry and aftertreatment templates in GT-SUITE. Additionally, use of built in DOE and optimization tools for parameter identification (rate constant optimization) will be demonstrated.

The course has been designed for engineers from both OEMs and exhaust suppliers. While familiarity with GT-ISE and GT-POST is desired, it is not required for this class. Please contact GTI if you would like to participate, but do not have previous experience with GT-SUITE. Each student will be provided their own computer and will participate in the class by building a complete DPF model and a user-defined catalyst using GT-POWER.

1.   Introduction to Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) modeling

  • Underlying theories including calculation of pressure drop, rate equations, conservation equations, soot oxidation, etc.
  • Soot loading
  • Passive and active regeneration modeling
2.   Introduction to catalyst modeling
  • User-defined chemical kinetics for detailed gaseous, global, and surface reaction modeling, including introduction to mathematical representations of rate equations, Arrhenius forms, reversible/irreversible reactions, 3-body reactions, pressure dependant rates, inhibition functions (Langmuir-Hinshelwood reactions), coverage, storage, etc.
  • Calibration of user-defined catalyst mechanisms (parameter identification) using built-in DOE and optimization tools
  • Introduction to coupling with Reaction Design (ChemKin) KINetics API
3.   Integration and control of aftertreatment devices with engine models
  • Detailed or mean-value engine as well as full vehicle integration
  • Control strategies (e.g. injection of urea in SCR, injection of fuel in DOC, etc.)
  • Use of encryption or compound objects for distribution of models to third parties
Course will be taught in English.
