Day 1 and 2: GT-POWER: Basic Training
Course Outline:
It will focus on the simulation of internal combustion engines through the use of GT-POWER. The following topics will be covered:
    • Introductory concepts of GT-SUITE
    • 1-D simulation of flow in the intake and exhaust systems
    • Discretization of the intake and exhaust systems
    • Modeling of: valves, combustion, heat transfer and injection
    • Post-processing (GT-POST)
The course will include the construction of models to enable the participants to learn how to use the software immediately.
    • Construction of a 4-cylinder engine model
    • Variations of the model that demonstrate possibilities such as parameter sweeps, transient simulations and optimization
The afternoon of the second day will be left open to discuss extra topics. The topics will selected by the participants. Some possible topics are:
    • Combustion & Heat Release Calculations
    • Turbochargers
    • Acoustics
    • Muffler Pre-processor
    • Controls & Simulink
    • CFD Coupling
    • SI Turbulent Flame Model & DI Jet Model
Please let us know in advance if you want us to cover any of these or other topics.
The course size is limited to 15 participants.
The course will be taught in English.
Day 3: Advanced Topics of GT-POWER
Course Outline
The topics covered during the will be very flexible to accommodate the interests of those in attendance, with the priority being given to topics of interest to the largest audience. Some topics that will definitely be covered include:
1. Optimization in GT-SUITE: The participant will learn how to use the new design of experiments tools and DOE Post Process added in Version 6.1. The pre-processor assists the user in designing a set of simulations that probe various combinations of the independent variables. The post-processor enables the user to take the output of these simulations and find the optimal solutions of the input variables and study the sensitivity of the various independent variables on the results. This tool will be compared and contrasted with the direct optimization method that is also available in GT-SUITE.
2. Distributed / Computing: The new distributed computing feature will be discussed, including the benefits, requirements and basic theory behind the system. This option to make each license of GT-POWER more powerful, even for customers with only one license, because the license(s) can conveniently and efficiently be shared among many users.
3. Heat Release Analysis: The participant will learn how to use the heat release analysis tool in GT-POWER. With it, a user can take a measured cylinder pressure profile, calculate the heat release rate of this combustion process and use this output to reproduce the same pressure profile in a model.
4. Open forum: discussion of all topics relating to GT-POWER and GT-SUITE. Proposed topics of discussion include:
    • Transient simulations, including with vehicle
    • Modeling for acoustics and acoustics features (both linear and non-linear)
    • Controls modeling (ThrottleController, PIDController, etc.)
    • Predictive combustion models, including submodels for emissions and knock
    • Emissions and Catalyst modeling (capabilities and limitations)
    • Cylinder Wall temperature modeling (FE submodel)
    • Introduction to coupling GT-SUITE with CFD (STAR-CD, FLUENT, FIRE)
    • Advanced turbocharging concepts
    • Advanced valvetrain (variable lift and timing)
    • Introduction to Mean Value Cylinder modeling (low resolution, fast computing
models for transient controls work)
