Waste Heat Recovery

Turn waste heat into usable energy. Model ORC and TEG systems for any heat source.

SOLUTION OVERVIEW

From Any Heat Source to Usable Energy

Large amounts of thermal energy are rejected every day by industrial processes, data center cooling systems, and combustion engines. Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and thermoelectric generator (TEG) systems can recover part of that energy as electricity or useful heat, but their performance depends strongly on heat source temperature, transient behavior, working fluid, and controls.

GT-SUITE enables engineers to estimate the energy recovery potential by modelling ORC systems at the component and system level, using a proven two-phase solution and NIST REFPROP fluid properties. The same models linked to a GT-POWER engine model, an industrial process model, or other thermal model predict recovered power, efficiency, and net system benefit across the full operating range including dynamic operation.

Whether for an industrial process or a container ship marine engine, GT-SUITE lets you get the most out of the system.

APPLICATION HIGHLIGHTS

From Components to Complete Systems

  • Model ORC and TEG systems as individual components or as a complete plant
  • Best-in-class, robust Navier-Stokes-based solver handles arbitrary initial conditions, zero flow and trans-critical operation
  • Faster than real-time calculation speeds enable efficient controls development in MiL, SiL, and HiL environments
  • Fluid properties from built-in NIST REFPROP supporting pure fluids, blends and custom fluids.
  • Spatially resolved evaporator and condenser models that capture phase change
  • Drive the system from any heat source profile (measured data, a process model, or an engine model)
  • Composition shift in zeotropic blends
  • Void fraction models
  • Model effects of oil in the working fluid
