Opal-RT & Gamma Technologies Join Forces To Streamline Engine Design Process

GT-Power RT Integrates GTI's Industry-Leading Engine Modeling Capabilities with RT-LAB's Flexible Real-Time Environment

Westmont IL and Montreal QC, April 9, 2002 - Opal-RT Technologies Inc. and Gamma Technologies Inc. (GTI), today announced that the two companies have joined forces to develop a real-time version of GT-Power. Part of GTI's GT-SUITE software product, GT-Power is the industry-standard engine simulation tool, and is currently used by most engine and vehicle makers, suppliers, and engine consulting companies.

Opal-RT is the world leader in distributed simulation on PC-based platforms. GTI is the leading supplier of Computer Assisted Engineering (CAE) software solutions for the engine, powertrain, and vehicle industries.

The real-time version of GT-Power, codenamed GT-Power RT, has been in development since 2000. The objective of this co-development initiative has been to integrate GT-Power's standard (non-real-time) analysis capabilities with Opal-RT's RT-LAB real-time environment, allowing engineers to have single sourcing for engine models needed for base engine design and for real-time simulations (hardware-in-the loop testing). Until now, control engineers could not use base engine GT-Power models, but had to create completely separate models to do their work.

There is a growing pressure on engineering professionals to maintain faster and more streamlined product design cycles. With GT-Power RT, models can now be developed that can evolve as the design evolves from preliminary layout to final product. This allows the engineer to freely choose varying levels of detail, model entire systems or specific subsystems as required, and share models with engineers with different analysis needs. Indeed, models can be used and re-used in future product design cycles saving time and lowering costs of development.

"There are only a few high fidelity engine models that engineers in the auto industry use - and GT-Power is the far-away leader among them, " said Jean Belanger, President of Opal-RT Technologies Inc. "Integrating RT-LAB's real-time capability into GT-Power RT not only overcomes the problem of model availability for hardware-in-the-loop, but also means that, for the first time, the industry's leading engine simulation tool is now available for use in the design and simulation of almost all aspects of automotive systems."

"RT-LAB's flexible real-time environment and use of commercial-off-the-shelf components make it a perfect fit for integration into GT-Power RT," said Dr. Thomas Morel, President of Gamma Technologies Inc. "Indeed, Opal-RT has fast gained a leadership position as a company committed to making the engineer's job easier by developing the technology needed to create a complete suite of proven real-time models that can be used, and reused, throughout the entire design process "

About GT-Power and GT-Power RT

GT-Power is clearly established as the #1 commercial engine modelling software for design/analysis, with a customer base that has grown to over 150 of the world's leading automotive companies and engineering firms. As a result, detailed and validated engine models already exist within many organizations, typically in base engine development. The introduction of GT-Power RT opens the door for better integration of base engine and control development activities. GT-Power RT is currently in use in a growing number of pilot programs, and is scheduled for commercial availability in Q3 2002.

About RT-LAB

RT-LAB is the real-time technology that revolutionizes the way model-based design is performed within the engineering organization. Through its openness, RT-LAB has the flexibility to be applied to any simulation and control problem, and scalability to provide a low-risk entry point for any application, allowing the developer to add computation power where and when needed-whether to dramatically speed up simulations or for real-time hardware-in-the-loop applications.

About Opal-RT Technologies, Inc.

Opal-RT provides software, hardware, and related solutions for real-time simulation applications, with the aim of enabling real-time parallel processing through flexible and affordable technologies. The company offers a full range of engineering simulation products - from enabling technologies to turnkey engineering simulators - and consulting services that include systems integration, software development, simulation and modeling, problem-solving, and training. Opal-RT's core expertise is in distributed hard-real-time simulation, with experienced engineers designing real-time simulators for automotive, electrical power, aerospace, robotics, and other industries where fidelity and fault tolerance requirements push rapid prototyping and hardware-in-the-loop testing to their limits.

About Gamma Technologies Inc.

Gamma Technologies Inc. (www.gtisoft.com) develops and licenses GT-SUITE - an integrated suite of CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) software tools. GT-SUITE which incorporates GT-Power, is the first true "virtual engine / powertrain / vehicle" simulation tool. The product makes it possible for engineering professionals to model engine controls, vehicle dynamics, valvetrain design, cooling system and fuel injection system analysis, and cranktrain dynamics. GT-SUITE's ease-of-use is further enhanced by integration with third party products such as STAR-CD, Fluent, Simulink, iSIGHT and Frontier.
